Getting Out of The House With Baby — 5K Race

I am so excited that spring is finally here! Having Aiden during the winter was tough because we weren’t able to get out of the house as much as I would have liked. Although, our 18 days of consecutive rain has put a bit of a damper on things — pun not intended…

Thankfully, today the rain held off for our morning activity of running the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP)’s Police Week 5K in Washington, DC. I have run in this event every year for the last three years, in fact last year I ran it pregnant! It is a very important event to me, as the wife of a police officer, because the sponsoring organization is a non-profit dedicated to honoring law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. More about ODMP here (if you are interested).

If you live in the DMV you know that there is no shortage of 5K races especially in the spring. These races provide a great opportunity to get out of the house with your little one. It is also a perfect and fun way to get some exercise which is a great thing. You might even be helping a great cause if you are participating in a charity fundraiser 5k. It’s also something you can do with other mom friends or non-mom friends together. This is the second 5K I have participated in this spring, the first I walked and today I ran, so it really is appropriate for any activity level; often it just depends on who you are with. We used  our Bob Ironman stroller, which worked perfectly for both running and walking.

Aiden was happy before the race because there were so many people for him to look at, and he slept during the actual race. Since the entire event (from leaving home to arriving back home) takes about four hours, we only had to feed him once while we were out and the fresh air tired him out for the ride home.

You can find a list of races for 2016 in DC here.

I am looking forward to sharing many more outdoor adventures… as soon as the weather improves!
